The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in Williamson County, Tennessee, A.N.C. Williams gained his freedom and began operating a store on Franklin's public square in 1863. Recognized as the first free Black merchant to conduct business on the city's main square, he rebuilt after his original location was destroyed during the Civil War and operated stores in Franklin for 63 years, contributing to the development of the city's postwar commercial economy.
