Laundry Entrepreneur and California Frontier Businesswoman

1872–1910s

The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in Missouri, America Newton gained her freedom and migrated west after the Civil War, traveling with her daughter from Kansas to Julian, California, in 1872. In the developing Southern California mining community, Newton established and operated her own laundry business, providing an essential service to local residents while supporting herself and her family through independent enterprise. Her career represents the participation of formerly enslaved Black American women in the commercial development of western frontier communities after emancipation.
