Steam-Engine Designer and Mechanical Innovator

1850s

The contribution

How this work helped shape America

While enslaved in Maryland, Benjamin Boardley, often recorded historically as Benjamin Bradley, demonstrated exceptional mechanical ability by constructing working steam engines and later developing a marine steam engine while associated with the United States Naval Academy. Because he was enslaved, he was legally prevented from obtaining a patent for his invention. His mechanical work and earnings contributed to his eventual purchase of freedom.
