1883–1891

The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in Georgia, Clem Horn established a farm in Alabama after emancipation and pursued ownership through the federal homestead system. He developed and cultivated 160.4 acres and filed Homestead Application #14524 before receiving Patent #7508 in 1891. Horn's claim converted agricultural labor into a legally protected family landholding.
