How this work helped shape America
Born free in Philadelphia into a family with deep roots in the city's Black community, David Bustill Bowser built a professional art and sign-painting business. He produced portraits, military banners and organizational regalia, including banners for United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. His workshop connected commercial art, skilled manufacturing and Black civic identity.
