The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in New Bern, North Carolina, Edward Hill migrated north after the Civil War and established a new life in Windsor, Connecticut. Over the following decades, Hill became a successful farmer and property owner, transforming a childhood under slavery into independent agricultural production and landownership in New England. He remained in Windsor for nearly sixty years while also participating in local civic life as a constable and volunteer firefighter, establishing a long-term economic and community presence that endured until his death in 1928.
