How this work helped shape America
Born in Rhode Island to a Black father who had gained freedom after Revolutionary War service and a mother of Narragansett and African ancestry, Elleanor Eldridge built an independent economic life through skilled domestic and service work. She earned income through dairying, cheesemaking, weaving, laundry, whitewashing and wallpapering, using her earnings to purchase land, construct a house and develop rental property in Providence. After creditors seized and sold valuable property she owned, Eldridge pursued a prolonged legal struggle and ultimately recovered it, preserving wealth she had created through decades of labor and entrepreneurship.
