1870s–1910

The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in Virginia, George Williams established himself as a property owner and farmer in Louisiana after emancipation and sought to expand his family's landholdings through the Homestead Act. Although Williams died before completing his federal claim, his son Chester continued the homesteading process and secured the patent in 1913, extending the family's pursuit of Black American landownership across generations.
