The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born in Pennsylvania to parents who had experienced slavery, Hallie Quinn Brown became an educator, professional elocutionist, author and national organizer. She helped establish the Colored Women's League, later led the National Association of Colored Women and used public speaking to support education, civil rights and women's political participation. Her 1926 book Homespun Heroines and Other Women of Distinction preserved the lives and accomplishments of Black women for future generations.
