How this work helped shape America
During the Civil War, Harriet Tubman gathered intelligence and helped plan and lead the Combahee River Raid in South Carolina, becoming the first woman to lead a United States military operation during wartime. Working with Colonel James Montgomery, Black Union soldiers, scouts, and pilots, the operation struck Confederate infrastructure and liberated more than 700 enslaved people.
