The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in Maryland in 1815, Henry Highland Garnet escaped with his family and became an educator, minister and international advocate. He established and led schools, promoted education and economic self-reliance, and used print and public speaking to organize Black communities against slavery. Garnet later served as United States minister resident and consul general to Liberia, extending Black American leadership into federal diplomacy.
