The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in North Carolina in 1857, Henry Plummer Cheatham gained an education after emancipation and worked as a school principal before serving in public office, including two terms in the United States House of Representatives. In later life he became superintendent of the Colored Orphanage of North Carolina and guided its growth for nearly three decades. His work connected education, federal representation and durable institutional care for Black children.
