The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in Virginia, John Berry Meachum purchased freedom and established a cooperage enterprise in St. Louis. His barrel-making business employed and trained Black workers in a skilled trade while supporting his broader work in education and community development. Meachum used enterprise as a practical means of creating employment, training and economic independence.
