Homesteader, Sawmill Owner and Oregon Ferry Operator

1870–1900s

The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in Tennessee, Louis Southworth earned enough money through mining and musical work in the West to purchase his freedom before establishing an independent economic life in Oregon. He operated a livery stable and worked as a blacksmith before establishing a 160-acre homestead along the Alsea River in 1879. Southworth developed the property, built a sawmill and operated a ferry transporting passengers and cargo along and across the river, contributing essential transportation and productive infrastructure to the developing Oregon community despite the state's history of racial exclusion.
