How this work helped shape America
Born in Ohio in 1866 to a family shaped by the transition from slavery to freedom, Mary B. Talbert became an educator and national civic organizer. She led the National Association of Colored Women, supported anti-lynching campaigns and organized the preservation of Frederick Douglass's Cedar Hill home. Her work built durable networks connecting Black women's clubs, public education, civil rights and historic preservation.
