The contribution
How this work helped shape America
Born enslaved in North Carolina, Melvin Dempsey left the South after emancipation and pursued economic opportunities in the American West, prospecting in Colorado before traveling to Alaska during the gold-rush era. Arriving in Valdez in 1898, Dempsey recognized the commercial opportunities created by the influx of prospectors and opened a restaurant and inn serving travelers headed toward the goldfields. He also maintained mining claims and later served as a postmaster and town trustee, contributing through entrepreneurship, resource development and public service to the growth of an emerging Alaska community.
