The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in Missouri around 1835, Moses Logan Rodgers was taken to California during the Gold Rush and earned enough through additional work to purchase his freedom. Through study and practical experience, he became a respected mining engineer and metallurgist, operated mines near Hornitos and was selected to supervise the Mount Gaines Mine. Contemporary reporting praised his mining knowledge, while prospective buyers sought his evaluation of mining properties. Rodgers placed Black American technical expertise in the management and development of California’s gold-mining economy during the nineteenth century.
