How this work helped shape America
Born free in Virginia in 1854 to a formerly enslaved father and a free Black mother, Olivia Davidson Washington became an educator and institution builder. She helped organize Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, taught students, developed its curriculum and led fundraising that financed land, buildings and expansion. Her administrative and financial work was central to converting a small school into a durable educational institution.
