How this work helped shape America
Born free in Massachusetts in 1759 to a Wampanoag mother and an African father who had survived the Atlantic slave trade, Paul Cuffe built one of the early United States' notable Black-owned maritime enterprises. Beginning as a young sailor, he accumulated capital through whaling and trading voyages, invested in vessels and developed a family shipping operation. Cuffe captained ocean-going ships, conducted Atlantic commerce and combined navigation, ship ownership, trade and property into a durable business network, demonstrating Black and Native American participation in the nation's early maritime economy.
