Coal Merchant, Real Estate Investor and Cincinnati Entrepreneur

1847–1884

The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in Virginia around 1812, Robert Gordon learned the coal trade while working in a Richmond coal yard and used earnings from selling coal waste to help purchase his freedom. After moving to Cincinnati around 1847, he established a coal-distribution business and competed in a market controlled largely by white merchants. Gordon expanded his wealth through property and financial investments and supported Cincinnati’s Black community, demonstrating how specialized trade knowledge could be converted into independent enterprise despite slavery and racial exclusion.
