The contribution
How this work helped shape America
Born enslaved in Washington County, Tennessee, Sarah Gammon Bickford traveled west after emancipation and built an extraordinary career in Montana. Beginning in 1888, she and her husband acquired interests in the water system serving Virginia City. After his death, Bickford secured full control and operated the Virginia City Water Company, managing accounts, maintaining infrastructure and providing an essential public service. Her ownership placed a formerly enslaved Black American woman at the head of a western utility enterprise during an era when both race and gender sharply restricted access to capital and business authority.
