1800s

The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Enslaved in Louisiana, Solomon Williams developed highly valued blacksmithing skills and hand-forged agricultural tools, architectural hardware and grave markers at Oakland Plantation. After emancipation, he moved away from the plantation and continued earning income through contracted blacksmithing work, carrying skilled ironworking from slavery into independent paid labor.
