How this work helped shape America
Born enslaved in Mississippi, William Beard established an independent economic life after emancipation through homesteading, farming and the timber industry. He secured nearly 160 acres in Alabama under the Homestead Act, developed the property with a home, agricultural buildings, crops and livestock, and operated a profitable logging enterprise that employed family members and others in his community.
