How this work helped shape America
Born enslaved in Washington, D.C., William Beckett became an important skilled worker in Joshua Peirce's nursery business at the Linnaean Hill estate, contributing to the commercial horticultural economy of nineteenth-century Washington. After slavery, Beckett established himself as a businessman and government employee, carrying experience developed under slavery into independent economic and public employment.
