How this work helped shape America
Born free in Boston, William Cooper Nell researched and published documentary histories of Black military service in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. His books gathered names, records and accounts that mainstream histories had ignored, preserving evidence of Black participation in the nation's founding wars. Nell's publishing work created a durable historical resource and expanded Black American authorship in the nineteenth-century print economy.
