Born enslaved in South Carolina in 1849, William J. Simmons became an educator, minister, publisher and institutional leader after emancipation. As president of the institution that became Simmons University of Kentucky, he expanded teacher and ministerial education for Black students. He also founded and edited publications and helped organize national Baptist educational work, creating networks that connected schooling, print and professional advancement.
