The contribution
How this work helped shape America
Born enslaved in North Carolina in 1847, William Reuben Pettiford became an educator, minister and financial institution builder after emancipation. In Birmingham he led the creation of the Alabama Penny Savings Bank, which opened in 1890 to encourage saving and expand access to capital for Black families and businesses. As president, Pettiford guided the bank through the financial panic of 1893 and helped it grow to more than $500,000 in assets and multiple Alabama branches by the early twentieth century. He also helped organize the National Negro Bankers Association, extending his work from one community bank into broader Black financial institution building.
