How this work helped shape America
Born enslaved in Kentucky, Zachary T. Fletcher served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War before building an independent economic life in Nicodemus, Kansas. He pursued homesteading and agricultural development while becoming a community entrepreneur whose St. Francis Hotel complex supported lodging, postal service, education and stagecoach transportation in the developing Black settlement.
