How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in Virginia in 1841, Blanche K. Bruce gained freedom during the Civil War and built a career in education, agriculture and public administration. In Mississippi he acquired substantial Delta farmland and served in county offices before becoming the first Black American elected to a full term in the United States Senate. Bruce later served as Register of the Treasury, connecting landownership, national policymaking and senior federal financial administration.
