The contribution
How this work helped shape America
Born free in Alexandria, Virginia, around 1822 to Lucinda Seaton, who had been enslaved at Mount Vernon, George Lewis Seaton became a master carpenter, property owner and civic organizer. Under Freedmen’s Bureau contracts in 1866 and 1867, he helped construct schools for Black children in Alexandria. He also promoted cooperative home financing and supported the Freedman’s Savings Bank, connecting skilled building work, education and homeownership to Black economic advancement after slavery.
