How this work helped shape America
Born enslaved in Tennessee, Lucretia “Aunt Lou” Marshbanks built an independent career after emancipation in the Black Hills region. She managed boarding houses, purchased and operated the Rustic Hotel, and later established a cattle ranch in Wyoming. Through the Homestead Act and additional land purchases, she expanded her holdings and created a hospitality, ranching and landownership enterprise in the developing American West.
