How this work helped shape America

Born in Colorado in 1885 to Black American parents whose families emerged from the nineteenth-century freedom struggle, George Perry Johnson built a career in film distribution and production. He promoted and distributed films made for Black audiences, published industry information and preserved extensive records of Black performers and filmmakers. His archive became a major documentary source for the history of early Black cinema.
