1850s–1880s

The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in North Carolina, Henry Taylor developed skilled carpentry and building expertise and established himself in Wilmington's construction economy before the Civil War. He worked as a carpenter-builder and participated in the city's building boom, with family tradition associating him with construction of the Bellamy Mansion. After emancipation, Taylor continued building and contracting, participated in commercial enterprise, and operated a grocery business, transforming skills developed under slavery into an independent career in construction and entrepreneurship.
