How this work helped shape America
Born in Georgia to parents who had experienced slavery and obtained their freedom, Lucy Craft Laney founded a school in Augusta in 1883 that developed into the Haines Normal and Industrial Institute. Under her leadership, the institution combined academic and vocational education and by 1912 employed 34 teachers while serving approximately 900 students. Laney also established Augusta's first kindergarten and developed nursing-training programs for Black women, creating educational and professional pathways that strengthened the skilled workforce and expanded economic opportunity for generations of Black Americans.
