Horace King
Bridge Builder, Contractor and Transportation-Infrastructure Entrepreneur
1830s–1880s
How this work helped shape America
Born enslaved in South Carolina, Horace King developed exceptional expertise in bridge construction and became one of the most accomplished builders working in Georgia and Alabama during the nineteenth century. He helped construct major covered bridges and other structures before gaining his freedom in 1846, after which he expanded his independent contracting career. King later worked with his sons in a family construction enterprise that built bridges and other infrastructure throughout the region, transforming specialized skills developed under slavery into an intergenerational business that contributed to transportation and commercial development across the American South.
