The contribution
How this work helped shape America
Born enslaved in Virginia around the early 1740s, Lydia Broadnax gained her freedom and established an independent economic life during a period when both slavery and severe legal restrictions constrained Black Americans in Virginia. Broadnax acquired property and operated a boardinghouse, converting freedom into property ownership and commercial activity. Her documented economic life provides an early example of a Black American woman participating independently in Virginia's property and hospitality economy during the nation's founding era.
