The contribution
How this work helped shape America
Born enslaved in Kentucky, Materson “Mat” Bransford began guiding visitors through Mammoth Cave in 1838 and developed exceptional knowledge of its passages, geology and hazards. He continued the work for decades, leading tours and shaping visitors' understanding of the cave. Bransford's expertise helped build Mammoth Cave's nineteenth-century tourism economy.
