The contribution
How this work helped shape America
Born enslaved in South Carolina, William C. Morrison learned tinsmithing and gained freedom during the Civil War. Using earnings and prize money associated with his wartime escape, he acquired property in Beaufort and operated an independent tinsmith shop downtown. Morrison transformed a skilled trade developed under slavery into manufacturing, business ownership and property after emancipation.
