1780s–1820

The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in New Jersey, Peter Hill trained in clockmaking and gained his freedom around the turn of the nineteenth century. He produced tall-case clocks and operated independently in a trade requiring precision metalwork, woodworking and mechanical knowledge. Surviving signed clocks document one of the earliest known Black American careers in professional clockmaking.
