The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born into a prominent Black Philadelphia family, William Henry Dorsey assembled nearly 400 scrapbooks documenting Black people, institutions, achievements and public debate. He clipped, organized and preserved material that newspapers and libraries often neglected. Dorsey's archive became an important research source for scholars including W. E. B. Du Bois and remains a major record of nineteenth-century Black life.
