How this work helped shape America

Born free in New York and raised in Ohio, Robert Seldon Duncanson built a professional career as a landscape painter and muralist. He received major commissions, exhibited internationally and created an acclaimed mural cycle for Cincinnati's Belmont mansion. Duncanson converted artistic skill into a sustained profession and became one of the most successful Black American painters of the nineteenth century.
