How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved at Waterloo Plantation in Louisiana in 1835, Phoebe Ann Bartlett Franklin established a farm with her family after emancipation. She maintained continuous residence, cultivated land and improved the property with a dwelling, corn crib, cotton house and other structures. Franklin filed Homestead Application #13822 in 1892 and received a federal patent for 42.23 acres in 1896, securing land in her own name as head of household.
