Jarvy Shields

Farmer, Wage Laborer and Reconstruction-Era Georgia Landowner

1865–1875

The contribution

How this work helped shape America

Born enslaved in Georgia, Jarvy Shields entered freedom through agricultural wage labor and farming during Reconstruction. He used post-emancipation earnings to obtain land and establish a household economy independent of the plantation system. His transition from coerced labor to paid work, cultivation and property ownership reflects the difficult but consequential creation of Black landholding in the postwar South.
