How this work helped shape America

Susie King Taylor served with Black Union troops during the Civil War as a nurse, laundress, and teacher, helping soldiers learn to read and write. In 1902, she published her wartime memoir and became the only known Black American woman to publish a memoir of her Civil War military experiences.
